Usaginingen literally translates to ‘rabbit-man’, a hybrid concept that excellently explains the characteristic and ability of this Japanese duo – simultaneously and effectively creating and merging video media and music, analog and digital, screen and stage, electronics and skill.

Emi and Shinichi Hirai embarked on this project in Berlin after moving there in 2010 from Tokyo, where they worked – perhaps surprisingly, given their rapid success in the art world – as a graphic designer and a radiologist, respectively.

Since then, they have performed in more than 25 countries. The duo has been enthusiastically received at numerous European festivals, and their performance at the Reykjavik Visual Music — Punto y Raya Festival in 2014 won an award in the Live Cinema category.

After six years in Berlin, they now live on the isolated island of Teshima in Japan, where they have opened their own theater and are focused on creating a rural art community.

Black Kite addresses an incident caused by the illegal dumping of industrial waste on the island of Teshima, relating it to the daily lives of the island’s residents.

Authors and performers: Emi and Shinichi Hirai
